COURTNEY QUIRIN
Courtney is a wildlife biologist turned documentary filmmaker and journalist.
She has a Master’s in Wildlife Management from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and her thesis research investigated farmer-primate conflict in Ethiopia. Following her Master’s, Courtney pursued a PhD in wildlife ecology from The Ohio State University, where she studied urban coyotes. However, she left her PhD program after two years to pursue filmmaking and journalism. Since then, Courtney has earned a Master’s of Journalism and Documentary Filmmaking from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Her thesis film, The Georgia Girl, won the 2015 CINE Golden Eagle Award for Best Student Documentary and the Margaret and William Hearst Award for Excellence in Documentary Film.
Courtney has reported domestically for Bay Nature Magazine, Mission Local, KQED, and Al Jazeera, and internationally for the Associated Press in South Africa.
Courtney recently finished her first feature documentary, GUARDIAN, which is about the erosion of science and environmental management in Canada. Courtney was a documentary film resident at SFFILM from 2016-2018 for GUARDIAN.
